Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition, ProstAware announce partnership
April 14, 2015 (Atlanta) — The Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition (GPCC), which was founded by survivors to promote education and early detection of the second-most fatal form of cancer among men, has announced a partnership with ProstAware, an organization devoted to raising awareness of the disease in metro Atlanta.
The partnership brings together two of Georgia’s leading prostate cancer advocacy non-profit groups.
“We are very excited about our new partnership,” said Frank Catroneo, Treasurer of GPCC. “With our reach and the innovation and medical expertise of ProstAware, we are certain to raise awareness for prostate health in Georgia.”
Dr. Scott Miller, founder of ProstAware and robotic urologist, said the partnership will help to further educate Georgia’s residents about prostate health and how everyone can participate in the battle against prostate cancer.
“One of ProstAware’s goals is for all men in metro Atlanta to learn about prostate cancer screening beginning at age 40,” Miller said. “This partnership makes this mission more achievable.”
GPCC conducts community outreach and education through speaking engagements, health fairs and a monthly newsletter to promote the importance of regular screening as part of the early detection process. It also partners with hospitals, clinics and urologists to help provide free annual screening events, especially for Georgia’s estimated 650,000 uninsured residents. GPCC is also responsible for the prostate cancer awareness license plates in Georgia. A portion of these proceeds go to support their efforts.
ProstAware educates the Atlanta area about prostate health by using music, technology, and sports — commonly shared interests among most men — as vehicles to generate interest and discussion. It also brings a board of directors in which medical doctors have strong representation. Those doctors include Dr. Miller, a practicing urologist; Dr. Pradeep Jolly, who has practiced as a medical oncologist and hematologist with Georgia Cancer Specialists; and Dr. James Benton, a radiation oncologist who practices at RC Cancer Centers.
The Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition, Inc. is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. GPCC’s vision is to eliminate deaths due to prostate cancer in Georgia.
