The Value of Simulation
We all know that pilots undergo many hours of flight simulation. Not only does this simulation aid in their initial training, but it also serves to familiarize them with situations that rarely occur. After all, they have the lives of others in their hands.
You may not realize that simulation exists in many aspects of medicine. For example, patient scenarios can be created to train medical students and residents in the diagnosis and treatment of disease states. In the case of robotic surgery, simulation is well suited for training and maintenance of proficiency.
Here are the main roles for robotic surgery simulation:
- Initial training, prior to performing procedures on actual patients
- Maintaining proficiency for surgeons who perform a low number of robotic surgeries
- To serve as a refresher after vacation or other leave of absence
- Continual reassessment of skills
Ask your surgeon if he or she regularly performs robotic surgery simulation. Would you ever waive your pilot’s simulation requirements?
